Dear Sunland Parents,
Each year, students in grades three through fifth participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) Assessment System. Depending on the grade level and instructional program in which your child is enrolled, your child will take one or more of the following tests:
· Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for English language arts (ELA) and mathematics are required in grades 3–5.
· The California Alternate Assessment (CAA) for ELA and Mathematics are administered to students with the most significant disabilities and whose Individualized Education Program (IEP) team has designated the use of alternate assessments.
· California Science Test (CAST) is required in grade 5. Students with the most significant disabilities and whose IEP team has designated the use of alternate assessments take the CAA for Science.
At Sunland, our goal is for all students to achieve their full potential.
The CAASPP test results are one way we can better understand if we are meeting this goal. We will start administering CAASPP assessments on the following dates
· Week of Monday April 28th Science 5th Grade Only
· Week of Monday May 5th Language Arts 3rd-5th
· Week of Monday May 12th Math 3rd-5th
To make sure your child feels comfortable taking tests, you can:
· Explain to your child that these tests are tools to help them learn and they should not be anxious or scared. · Explore the practice tests with your child at https://www.caaspp.org/practice-and-training/index.html so your child can become familiar with the platform and setup of the tests.
· Remind your child that you and the teacher want them to do their best and are there to help them prepare.
In early fall of 2025, the State will make available your child’s score report, which will include the scores for all the tests your child takes this spring. When combined with other measures such as grades, classwork, and teacher observations, these test scores give families and teachers a more complete picture of the student’s learning. You can securely access, download, and print your child’s current and prior year’s test score reports in the LAUSD Parent Portal (https://parentportalapp.lausd.net/parentaccess/).
Parents or guardians have the option of exempting their child(ren) from participating in the CAASPP program. If you would like to exempt your child, please submit your request in writing to your school as soon as possible so we can make alternative arrangements for your child on the date of the test. Note that if the request is submitted to the school after the student has started testing, any tests the student has completed will be scored and a report may be generated. Please submit your request to Mr. Cruz, Testing Coordinator.

Cada año, los estudiantes de tercero a quinto grado participan en el Sistema de Evaluación del Rendimiento y Progreso Estudiantil de California (CAASPP). Según el grado y el programa educativo en el que esté inscrito su hijo, este presentará una o más de las siguientes pruebas:
• Las Evaluaciones Sumativas Smarter Balanced para Lengua y Literatura Inglesas (ELA) y Matemáticas son obligatorias de tercero a quinto grado.
• La Evaluación Alternativa de California (CAA) para ELA y Matemáticas se administra a los estudiantes con discapacidades más significativas y cuyo equipo del Programa de Educación Individualizado (IEP) ha designado el uso de evaluaciones alternativas.
• La Prueba de Ciencias de California (CAST) es obligatoria en quinto grado. Los estudiantes con discapacidades más significativas y cuyo equipo del IEP ha designado el uso de evaluaciones alternativas presentan la CAA para Ciencias.
En Sunland, nuestro objetivo es que todos los estudiantes alcancen su máximo potencial.
Los resultados de la prueba CAASPP nos permiten comprender mejor si estamos cumpliendo con este objetivo. Comenzaremos a administrar las evaluaciones CAASPP en las siguientes fechas:
• La semana del lunes 28 de abril, Ciencias (solo 5.º grado)
• La semana del lunes 5 de mayo, Literatura Inglesas (3.º a 5.º grado)
• La semana del lunes 12 de mayo, Matemáticas (3.º a 5.º grado)
Para asegurarse de que su hijo se siente cómodo haciendo los exámenes, puede:
· Explicarle a su hijo que estos exámenes son herramientas para ayudarle a aprender y que no debe sentir ansiedad ni miedo. · Explorar las pruebas de práctica con su hijo en https://www.caaspp.org/practice-and-training/index.html para que pueda familiarizarse con la plataforma y la configuración de las pruebas.
· Recordarle a su hijo que usted y el profesor quieren que lo haga lo mejor posible y que están ahí para ayudarle a prepararse.
A principios del otoño del 2025, el estado pondrá a su disposición el informe de calificaciones de su hijo, que incluirá las calificaciones de todas las pruebas que su hijo realice esta primavera. Cuando se combinan con otras medidas como las notas, el trabajo en clase y las observaciones del profesor, estos resultados de los exámenes ofrecen a las familias y a los profesores una imagen más completa del aprendizaje del alumno. Puede acceder, descargar e imprimir de forma segura los informes de calificaciones de los exámenes de su hijo del año actual y del año anterior en el Portal para Padres del LAUSD (https://parentportalapp.lausd.net/parentaccess/).
Los padres o tutores tienen la opción de eximir a su(s) hijo(s) de participar en el programa CAASPP. Si desea eximir a su hijo, presente su solicitud por escrito a su centro escolar lo antes posible para que podamos tomar disposiciones alternativas para su hijo en la fecha del examen. Tenga en cuentaque,e si la solicitud se envía a la escuela después de que el alumno haya comenzado las pruebas, se puntuarán todas las pruebas que el alumno haya realizado y se podrá generar un informe.
